The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has just published the final report of its two year ‘Shaping the Future’ research programme into the factors driving sustainable organisation performance. In this fascinating two-phase study, working with six organisations from the private and public sectors, CIPD ultimately identified eight key themes that are important for long-term performance. These range from Alignment through to Shared Purpose and of course include Leadership. I strongly recommend the report. CIPD produce a wealth of valuable articles and tools on all aspects of organisation development. For example they identified parallels
between the findings from this research programme and from other CIPD initiatives, such as the need for more agility and flexibility, more collaborative leadership, and greater two-way communication and feedback.
The issues may sound easy to address but are the ones many of our Insight clients grapple with most often. In Footdown, where we strive to live to our values and have a shared purpose, we are struck whenever we use Insight to see many of those same issues recurring.
