I should have learned from the last set of directions. For those of you that don’t know, I have been scared of heights for a long time…
“A wall crosses the summit of Pen-y-ghen, and just over it a triangulation pillar and a large cairn marks the highest ground. Immediately in front of them the path leads right to the prominent tiered southern end of the mountain where the easy path abruptly ends… A rocky descent now follows… oh, and if that idiot with the cameras is here tell him to make sure that he sticks to the path…“
Well, this was a very different walk than the last one. Admittedly there were fewer opportunities to take pictures of varying features, but the views were stunning. I am not sure I did them justice, especially the shots of my climbing down near the end of the film…
David will be pleased. I ate lots of protein today and drank 3 litres of water. This was a more strenuous day all round and I changed up and down through the layers of clothes more often as the weather changed. I can’t believe that I thought I was going to do this in jeans!
I will try and add some more words later, but I am running out of time. Tonight I was going to be staying out (under the stars) as I walked the longest on the second peak of Ingleborough, per the original plan… But, I checked the forecast today (I am getting more responsible but not yet quite understanding the little sentences about degree of difficulty… they all seem to be mountain goats that do the walks… ha!):
Weather Forecast
Summary for all mountain areas A major change in the weather pattern will commence as a series of deep Atlantic lows brings periods of rain, upland gales and low cloud to all mountain areas. On Tuesday, and through much of the week, rain and low cloud will be focused on western mountains.
Headline, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales Upland gales. Rain, mainly morning Yorkshire.
How Windy? Southwesterly, 35 to 40mph, gusts 50 to perhaps 65mph. Highest speeds in north Yorkshire.
Effect Of Wind? Considerable buffeting on higher hills; and on highest summits in Ingleborough area walking where exposed very difficult.
What Weather? Rain, extensive for a few hours in morning, especially Yorkshire. The rain will then become patchy, and in the Peak District, more or less dry apart from the odd patch of drizzle on western slopes.
Cloud on the Hills? Becoming extensive. Yorkshire Persistent low cloud; typical base 300-400m. Peak District Hills soon covered above 450m occasionally 350m west and a little higher east. May well lift by 100m in the afternoon, particularly east.
So I’m off to see if I can get started before it gets too bad… not much in the camera department today. I will just be happy to get round… and I’m not staying out!
